Sonoma City Hall

Walk all the way around the building. Can you tell that all 4 sides are nearly the same? Why is that? Why does a city need a city hall?

When City Hall was built in 1908, all the businesses around the Plaza wanted to face the front of city hall. So the clever architect made all four sides look the same so no one felt they were facing the back of the building.

By 1908 Sonoma was a modern small town. The Plaza started to look like it does today but the trees were young and small. Soon after City Hall was built, a Carnegie Library followed, designed by the same architect. The old library today houses the Sonoma Valley Visitor’s Bureau, a great place for maps, information and bathrooms.
