497 1st Street West
Did you find it? The Leese adobe is near the corner of 1st Street West and Napa Street. Today it’s part of Taub Outpost.
Jacob Leese was Sonoma’s first American settler. He married María Vallejo, Mariano and Salvador’s sister. When Americans captured Sonoma in the Bear Flag Revolt (1846), freeing it from Mexico, they arrested Mariano and Salvador then took Jacob to translate. The Americans upset Rosalia so much that she never spoke English again. Years later, their home became a school for young ladies.
